06-FEB-2004 Oracle intensifies battle for PeopleSoft
Oracle Wednesday upped its hostile takeover bid for PeopleSoft to $26 per share. The amended offer is 33% higher than Oracle's previous bid of $19.50 per share, and a 19% premium over PeopleSoft's Feb. 3 closing price of $21.89. It pushes the value of the deal to $9.4 billion.
Analysts agree the $26 per share has a much better chance of being accepted by investors.

With its 10g database for Windows due for release this month, Oracle announced last week at its annual AppsWorld conference that it will slash prices to compete with Microsoft. Currently, Microsoft's SQL Server database starts at $4,999 per processor. Oracle's Standard Edition One database is priced at $5,995 per processor. However, Oracle co-president Chuck Phillips told AppsWorld attendees that Oracle 10g will debut at "the same list price per processor as Microsoft."
